During one of our Tiger Safari India expeditions, we had been tracking this tigress since the previous evening. At one point, we missed her by barely 30 seconds as she slipped silently into the bushes, leaving us with only a fleeting glimpse. From her direction of travel, we were fairly certain she was heading toward the area where her cubs were hiding.
We positioned ourselves there and waited. After about 30 minutes, the langurs suddenly erupted into alarm calls. We knew she was close, but unfortunately safari time was over and we had to leave the park. It was a disappointing drive back to the lodge, but one thing was clear — we knew exactly where we needed to be the next morning.
At first light, during our Tiger Safari Tour India, we were among the first vehicles through the gate. Overnight rain had erased all pugmarks, making tracking difficult. We checked the surrounding roads but eventually returned to the same area where we expected the tigress to reunite with her cubs.
After nearly an hour of waiting, we decided to make another round. Barely 200 metres down the track, we were stunned to see more than 20 vehicles gathered ahead. Instantly, we regretted not checking that road sooner.
From the back of the queue, we could see the tigress with her two cubs feeding on a freshly killed spotted deer. Our driver tried to work his way through the vehicles for a better angle, but I asked him to stay where we were. If the tigress decided to move toward the nearby waterbody, our position could become an advantage.
A few minutes later, that gamble paid off.
The tigress rose, and with her cubs following closely behind, crossed the track and headed toward the woods. Being the last vehicle suddenly made us the first to reach the spot where she was expected to emerge. We enjoyed several magical minutes photographing the family as they moved through the forest, the kind of experience that makes an India Tiger Safari truly unforgettable.
Then came the moment we will never forget.
The tigress crossed the road once again. A safari canter blocked our view and I could only see the two cubs running across the track. I assumed the tigress had already crossed. But as the canter moved aside, there she was — standing right in the middle of the road, calmly drinking from a rain-filled puddle.
The overnight rain had left small pools of water along the track. Within seconds, both cubs joined their mother. Suddenly, all three were right in front of us, sharing a drink from the same puddle.
For a few precious moments, the tigress and her cubs looked in our direction, made eye contact, and then quietly disappeared back into the forest.
