Four Cubs, One Watchful Mother

Tiger Marathon Tour

Feb 26 8th - March 14th , 2026

When people think of a Tadoba Tiger Safari, they naturally think of tigers. After all, Tadoba is one of the premier destinations for an India Tiger Safari and attracts wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. But every now and then, the forest reminds us that it has far more to offer than its striped celebrities.

We were exploring one of the buffer zones of Tadoba. A few months earlier, the resident tigress of the area had been relocated to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, and since then the zone had become relatively quiet. Most safari vehicles had shifted their focus elsewhere. Fortunately, we had already enjoyed excellent tiger sightings in other zones during our trip, so there was no pressure to chase tigers. We decided to take things easy and photograph whatever the forest chose to reveal.

For me, this particular zone had always been lucky for sloth bear sightings. So rather than looking for tiger tracks, I asked our driver to check a few areas where I had encountered sloth bears in the past. While driving, we came across another safari vehicle and stopped to exchange information. They informed us that a female sloth bear with three cubs had been seen moving in a particular direction.

Without wasting any time, I asked our driver to head that way. What surprised me was that the other vehicle wasn’t following the bears. Curious, I asked our guide why. His answer shocked me. The guests were local visitors and were interested only in tigers. To me, that seemed unbelievable. Anyone who has spent time in the forests of India knows that a sloth bear sighting is often much rarer than a tiger sighting.
Based on the direction of travel, we guessed that the mother bear was heading towards a nearby water body. Sloth bears are naturally shy animals, so we positioned our vehicle carefully where she would not notice us and settled down to wait.

About fifteen minutes later, we noticed movement in the distance. Dark shadows were slowly approaching through the forest. The excitement inside the vehicle began to build. Suddenly, one of the guests spotted them and couldn’t contain herself. “Sloth bear! Sloth bear! Sloth bear!” she exclaimed.

Unfortunately, her excitement was a little too loud. The mother bear immediately changed direction and disappeared into the cover. It was heartbreaking. The guest realized her mistake instantly, and so did everyone else. We waited patiently for another twenty minutes, hoping the bear might regain confidence and return.

Eventually she reappeared from a different angle, and as we started photographing her, we noticed something extraordinary. There weren’t three cubs. There were four.

For a moment, nobody could believe what they were seeing. A sloth bear with four cubs is an exceptionally rare sight. In all my years of wildlife photography and leading India Wildlife Tours, I had rarely come across such an encounter.

As we continued observing, we located the family again behind a patch of bamboo. The mother was busy digging for termites while the cubs wrestled with each other, climbed over fallen logs, and played endlessly. It was one of those magical wildlife moments where time seems to stand still.

After spending nearly thirty minutes watching them, the family began moving again. By now, we had understood that she was an extremely cautious mother and was probably trying to reach the waterhole without disturbance. This time, instead of following closely, we decided to position ourselves well ahead and wait from a respectful distance. Another vehicle joined us in doing the same.

Soon she appeared once again. It was a sight I will never forget. The mother bear walked confidently towards the waterhole with all four cubs. Three were riding comfortably on her back while the fourth ran behind, trying its best to keep up. It was one of the most heartwarming scenes I have ever witnessed in the wild.
At that point, we made a conscious decision not to follow her any further. She had earned her peace. From a distance, we watched as she reached the water, drank quietly, and then disappeared into the surrounding vegetation.

Later, we repositioned ourselves one final time, hoping for one last glimpse. As if rewarding our patience and respect, she appeared once more before slowly melting back into the forest.
Among all my experiences leading a Tiger Safari Tour India, this remains one of the most remarkable. Seeing a sloth bear is a privilege in itself. Seeing a mother with four cubs is extraordinary. Spending hours observing their natural behavior without disturbing them is something very few people ever get to experience.
Moments like these are what make an India Tiger Safari truly special. While many visitors arrive hoping to see a tiger, the forests of India often surprise you with something even more memorable. This wasn’t just a sighting. It was a reminder that the greatest rewards in the wild often come when you stop chasing and simply allow nature to unfold on its own terms.
A true once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
